Any problem we come across as a society we tend to ask the government to solve it. The irony is we forget most the problems were in fact caused by the government in first place. However well intentioned the plans are, the incentives of government schemes tend to have a negative impact on whom it is intended and the taxpayers.
Covid lockdowns
It is quiet interesting that the country as diverse as India, unanimously obliged the idea of stringent lockdowns imposed by the various state governments with arbitrary rules and no scientific data to back up why opening up only during so and so hours reduces the spread of Covid. A study from researchers in IISc showed that the case load exceeded the worst case predictions without lockdowns in Karnataka.
The number of confirmed cases in the worst-case scenario (of no lockdown) was expected to be 24.28 lakh; in the scenario with 50 per cent lockdown, it was to be 24.21 lakh; while in the complete effectiveness scenarios it was 24.04 lakh. However, the confirmed cases were 24.72 lakh, which are much higher than even the worst-case scenario - Prof Sashikumar Ganesan (IISc)
Even the WHO had said it doesn’t advocate lockdowns and only be used as last resort for gathering medical equipments as it would push millions of people into poverty. Even though there is no clear evidence that lockdown works, the media and panel of experts in the government push for these draconian measures. These measures have pushed 1.2 million people out of jobs in the country who work in malls, construction costs have shot up by 35 %, some of the theatres, hotels, gyms, restaurants and other industries have been permanently shut down. Mental stress and anxiety have risen sharply.
Make what you will of the lock downs, but the idea of demonising common man for gathering in public and not even one prominent media outlet or politician presented the case against lockdowns shows the controlling of narrative. Big players like Amazon benefitted hugely thanks to lockdowns as its competitors struggled. In the US, states with strict lockdowns had large death per lakh(New York, New Jersey), compared to states with less restrictions(Florida, Texas). It is by no means conclusive that not locking down had anything to do with less numbers but it can be said that locking down had little to no effect.
So the government which shuts down businesses gives a one time relief package, while simultaneously hiking the petrol prices while just removing these lockdowns can be of greater help than these gimmicks.
